Newisys outlines system management for Opteron servers

Initial product will be a two way, 1U system

AMD PARTNER Newisys has produced a white paper on system management which gives a strong indication of the infrastructure being put in place for the Opteron server family when it is introduced in 2003.

A sharp eyed contributor on Ace's Hardware forum noticed the 14 page PDF at the Newisys site.

The document goes into detail about the 1U 2P server functions, which include an embedded Power PC processor, flash memory, RAM, Ethernet and "a significant amount of software". That will allow administrators to operate servers away from the machines themselves, including, the document says, the ability to turn server power for Opterons on and off remotely.

System management software includes the standard UCD version of SNMP for Linux, the standard Linux version of SSH, NFS and Samba, NTS and Active Directory. Most functions can be managed from ordinary web browsers such as Mozilla or Internet Explorer, in combination with Java and SSL.

The document said that the initial Newisys product will be a 1.75-inch server for one or two processors, but that this will expand.
