WE MISSED AN ANNOUNCEMENT Texas Instruments made last week but it's an important one for anyone whose notebook packs up after just an hour or so for life.

The not very excitingly named TPS61107 is a convertor and power management integrated circuit which will be used for systems relying on single and dual cell alkaline, NiCd and NiMH batteries.

TI claims that the device's pulse width modulation switching results in a 95 per cent conversion efficiency.

The chip can be disabled which also helps to reduce battery drain when devices are shut down.

The chip is expected to be used not just in notebooks but in PDAs, cameras, MP3 players and other electronic devices. ยต
