THE US government might have created a diplomatic incident when it approached the EU and warned it to be 'nicer to Microsoft'.

According to ZD Net, European Commissioner Neelie Kroes has complained that the US Embassy "pressured her" over the Microsoft antitrust case.

Apparently, US diplomats told her to be nicer to Vole ahead of her decision to fine the software giant €280 million in July.

It made sod all difference as Kroes fined the software outfit anyway. But she told Dutch newspaper Financieele Dagblad that the US government's action was an intervention too far.

Later a Kroes' spokesperson added in an email to ZDNet UK that Kroes "was lobbied and that she did not appreciate it".
