Prescott to hit 3.80GHz in Q2 next year

Desktop Roadmaps Tejas in Q4
Wed Aug 27 2003, 13:43
BY THE SECOND quarter of 2004, Intel is telling its customers that 3.80GHz Prescott processors will be available. And it has already started targeting the successor to the Prescott, codenamed Tejas, for Q4 next year.

The Prescott will max out at speeds of close to 4GHz, when presumably Tejas takes over the megahertz mantle.

In the first half of next year, Intel will introduce Prescott chips at 3.20GHz, 3.40GHz, and 3.60GHz as well as 3GHz and 2.8GHz. Each of these will have 1MB of level two cache, support hyperthreading, and an 800MHz front side bus. The Celeron versions of Prescott will be introduced at speeds of 2.80GHz and 3.06GHz, using a 533MHz bus and 256K level two cache.

But the first Prescotts, it appears, will not be produced on a 90 nanometer process, although this was always the plan until now. This is something of a puzzle which we hope to explore further.

As we wrote last time we covered Intel's desktop plans, the Prescott will launch at $640. There are price changes to the entire range of Pentium 4 desktop processors slated for the 26th of October. µ
