Google's Schmidt costs $532,755 to protect

Only a buck to show up

GOOGLE'S Eric Schmidt may only work for a dollar but it costs more than $532,755 to protect him, according to the New York Times.

Schmidt, who like Apple's Steve Jobs, gets his money from shares rather than cash, collects a $1 salary and a $1,723 holiday bonus each year.

However it seems that his salary is dwarfed by the huge wodges of cash spent to keep Eric safe from Google's enemies, according to regulatory filings.

In fact the bulk of Google's compensation seems to go on protecting Schmidt from stray bullets and burglars and the $22,456 used to offset taxes due his Google-chartered aircraft perk.

Google's co-founders, Sergey Brin, president of technology, and Larry Page, president of products, earned the same salary and bonus as Schmidt. Page received an additional $36,795 for transportation, logistics and personal security.

The reason we know how much it costs to protect Brin is because guidance by the Securities and Exchange Commission says that personal security should be considered a perk that should be listed as compensation.
