Ding, dong bell, Intel chips are EOL

Not with a bang, but with a whimper
Tue Jun 27 2006, 11:33
SOURCES a hair's breadth away from a major component distributor alert us to a rash of microprocessors from Chipzilla which will be obsolete soon.

This, natch, is concomitant with the forthcoming introduction of Conroe and Conroe Extremes - the prices of which will stay stable until year end.

The distie warns that there will be short supplies of the Pentium D 940, while the Pentium D 920 is a goner. So too are the Pentium D 840, 830 and the 820, while the 805 will show a price drop in July and enter the Ginunga Gap in Q4.

Other disappearances from the CPU Ball waving goodbye to the world are the 670, the 660, the 650 the 640 and the 630.

Goodbye too to the long suffering 561, the 551, the 431, the 511 and the 506, while a whole family of Intel Celerons will see their prices cut in July while others will bow out with a whimper, no bang, in Q4. A dealer price for the 315 is £20 - you can buy a packet of cigarettes for that, almost. µ
