Athlon 64s in somewhat short supply, already

Computex 2003 80,000 promised in September, it's nearly October

SEVERAL MOTHERBOARD manufacturers here in Taiwan said that the Athlon 64 series, due to be formally launched this week, is not available in quite as much quantity as they would like.

AMD Taiwan has told several motherboard makers that there will be a total of 80,000 Athlon 64s available in September, but so far they are still very thin on the ground.

By the end of the year, AMD has promised, it will ship 400,000 Athlon 64s. The projected numbers for next remain as we reported some weeks ago.

Is this a problem for AMD? Well, that rather depends on demand. With average selling prices hovering around the $500 or so mark, and if AMD manages to deliver 400,000 by the end of the year, maybe it's not a problem at all.

We're seeing AMD here later this week. We'll ask then. ยต

CHARLIE D wonders if anyone can tell us what the ‘batch glitch' that has delayed the first round of Athlon 64s to so many vendors is? While word has it that it is temporary and minor, the talkative techs of Texas are suddenly not so talkative.
