A ROMANIAN 'whitehat' hacker has been charged with conspiracy and nine counts of computer intrusion by a US court.

According to Cnet, Victor Faur, 26, of Arad, Romania led a group called the "WhiteHat Team" which hacked its way into 150 US defence sites and NASA.

Prosecutors said that after hacking into the government computers, Faur allegedly caused the compromised machines to display screens that advertised the hack. The WhiteHat team hacked its way into NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Goddard Space Flight Centre, the Sandia National Laboratory, and the U.S. Naval Observatory.

The machines collected and process data from spacecraft and because of the break-ins, systems had to be rebuilt and scientists and engineers had to manually communicate with spacecraft.

Faur is currently in Romania, where he was arrested and then bailed. The US is seeking extradition from the Romanian government, but this could take up to two years. µ
