WoW now has 11 million players

More than most countries
Wednesday, 29 October 2008, 08:59

ONLINE GAME World of Warcraft is now played by more than 11 million gamers.

According to a Blizzard press release, the online population has swelled by a million players in ten months. And that's before the release of the Wrath Of The Lich King expansion pack in a couple of weeks which is expected to increase numbers even further.

If the World of Warcraft were a nation, it would be the 75th most populated country on Earth ahead of Greece, but behind Zimbabwe. Of course it would be a nation where the entire population lived in basements with their mothers and no one would know of the concept of 'outside'. At least there would be little real crime and the entire food economy would be based on pizza and Doritos.

Spokeself Mike Morhaime said it was jolly rewarding to see gamers around the world continue to show such strong support for the MMORPG.

Good for his bank balance too we guess. µ

I love the part with living at your mother and the concept (rofl) of outside.

The great communist state.

Apparently there's 11 million people that think their everyday grind of Sleep,Eat, Work, Eat, Work, Eat, Pinch a loaf, Sleep, is just too exciting and nerve wracking. They'd much prefer to do the grind online that only wow can serve up in it's excruciatingly mind-numbing boring way.

Also apparently they like the massively imposed laws that blizzard has setup. No you can't use that tool. No you can't have a 3rd party tool running even if it's not completely not related. No you can't run it on linux with wine. No you can't speak any language besides English. No you can't be anyone other than an imprint of the cookie cutter moulds we have provided. No you can't sell your characters online. Welcome to communism baby.

I vote we move these 11 million orc hugging fun seeking communists to Antarctica and they can live out their "Grinding" lives in isolation.

Aroof.

I prefer Trackmania

I hear tell there's about 4 million players on Trackmania.
You don't get to kill anything but it's approximately the same useless fodder (plus no outrageous usage fees).
I used to be big on blackberry Sudoku (about 30,000 participants) but my job blocked access to the server, so much for that then.
I do count myself a part of the billion+ slackjaw fraternity of boob tube watchers, so I got that going for me.
I can't get into WoW though. But you know, it's hard to argue that WoW is any more insipid than TV or Trackmania or Inquirer-reading.
Did I mention I possess a library card? I even use it sometimes too!

It's just a game....

I would much rather be in Azeroth but we do have real lives too. Some of us even have jobs and children! Omg! how do we find time for that?

It could be much much worse... we could spend our free time watching xfactor or I'm a celebrity get me out of here.

Oh btw... i don not drink, do not smoke and if i want to spend £8.99 a month for my entertainment i think i am entitled to do so.
