Tatung has idiot-proof toys, large and small

Music widgets and 4S blades

TATUNG WAS SHOWING parts from high end 4S Opteron blades all the way down to tiny music transmission widgets last week.

Being the huge OEM/ODM they are, you can get almost anything you need from them, and a few parts you didn't know you needed.

The first little widget is called the Wireless Music Hopper. It is a pair of little transmitters, you can see the receiver below absolutely dwarfed by the Tyan pen beside it. The concept is simple, you plug one side, with blue trim, into the music source, and the other side, with yellow trim, outputs sound. They are small, basically idiot-proof, and a good idea.

Tatung has a similar set of wireless headphones called the Wistereo. They are 2.4GHz rechargeable units that do 2 channel sound with a wireless mike. Nothing spectacular, but they sounded decent, and a good rechargeable headset with mic is hard to find.

Next we take the proverbial sharp left turn and come to the brick servers. If you think of blades as smaller <8U units, the bricks are much larger, but similar in concept. This one is called the 300-00010-xx, a catchy name for a quad Opteron based on the Nvidia 2200 chipset. The interesting bits are the built in Infiniband passed through the clunky backplane connectors on top and the extra DIMM slot. The DIMM in the top left hand side is for an Infiniband buffer should you want to buffer your Infiniband.

Last up, they had a bunch of LCD and plasma TVs, from 20" to 42". Normally, you would never see one, Tatung is a huge OEM/ODM, so everything them make tends to get rebadged or recased. This time however, those in Europe-land will get a chance to buy the 27" under the Tatung brand name. You should see them hitting stores around the end of July, and based on what I saw, they will be cheap and good quality. Worth a look.µ

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
