AMD Athlon is stable - AMD

No truth in claims claim
Wed Nov 07 2001, 10:07
AMD HAS UPDATED its list of Athlon recommended motherboards and heatsinks, and has notified its resellers of the changes.

But so far it and its partners appear not to have got very far with a plan to ensure certain motherboards implement cutout if their fans or heat sinks levitate away from the processor.

According to Tom's Hardware Guide, AMD is taking steps to ensure motherboards will cut out under these happenstances.

But the situation still remains pretty confused, at least from our standpoint over here at the INQUIRER.

A representative from AMD told us last week that the mobo used by The Pabster was not intended to work with the cooling system tested there, while the firm also released a video purporting to show that conflagration isn't a problem.

In a benchmark test between Pentium 4s and Athlons, the same hardware site suggested in its conclusion that the latter processor was less stable than the Intel offering.

Robert Stead, marketing director of AMD Northern Europe, denied absolutely that there was any truth in the claim that the Athlon was less stable than the Pentium 4.

He said that if there had been a problem, his customers would have been battering on his door complaining. Instead, he said, his PC customers were buying "rather more" AMD processors than he had expected. ยต
