SUN HAS firmed up the date it will open source the core Java platform.

According to Infoworld, Sun President and CEO Jonathan Schwartz told the Oracle OpenWorld conference that it should be all ready by Christmas. The core platform will include the Standard Edition of Java and will be offered under an Open Source Initiative approved licence.

Already the Java Enterprise Edition, is available via open source, but the move to shunt the whole platform has been much anticipated by Open Saucers for a while now.

Sun told punters at the Java One conference in May, that Java would be made open source but did not say when. Schwartz told the Oracle conference that 70 per cent of Solaris licences were deployed on gear from rivals Dell, HP, and IBM.

He said the relationship between Sun and the three had changed to the point that they had gone from being rivals to channel partners.
