EMCORE AND INTEL have announced a final agreement for Emcore to get its hands on the telecom-related portion of Intel's Optical Platform Division.
The assets are being flogged for $85 million and include intellectual property, turnable transponders, 300-pin transponders and integrable turnable laser assemblies, my oh my.
Emcore is hoping to increase the company's presence in the telecom market segment, as well as building on its fiber optics product portfolio.
CEO at Emcore, the pleasently alliterated Reuben Richards, is no less than chuffed on the agreement: "Emcore estimates these assets will generate $65 million of revenue in 2008, and believes this acquisition will accelerate its path to earnings per share profitability as expected in mid-2008."
What's innit for Intel then? Well, the chip maker can now focus its cash and investments on core communications and embedded market segments. Apparently. µ

The term is "tunable" as in frequency tunable, not "turnable". Sheesh Louise, even I know that, and I'm a grizzled old veteran from the days of the PDP-11 and RSX-11M.

With time, it will become very obvious what is in it for intel. It just isn't at the moment.
