FROM SEPTEMBER this year 9,000 computers in Swiss state schools will pull the plug on dual boot capability.
The computers which have up until now been running Windows as well as Ubuntu will forever be free from Microsoft when they become Linux boxes.
The move comes after instructions from the country's Department of Public Instruction which has become a serious advocate of Open Source software.
Whilst the move will obviously save money from the public purse, school officials point out that the switch also levels the playing field for those students who might not be able to afford expensive Microsoft software.
Manuel Grandjean, director of the Media Service Schools, also pointed out with alacrity usually absent in civil servants, that the move would also "avoid providing captive customers for large companies". Stick it to The Man, Manuel! µ

And just how many Swiss kids can't afford Microsoft Software?

I don't mean buying the programs... I mean the whole damn company! Or is this a special measure for the lovely Albanian families moving into the area lately?
Every day people chip away at MS a little bit. It doesn't look like much at first, but these small changes add up over time.

Someday we're going to wake up and wonder where Windows went.
Swiss has one of the highest GDP per capita in Europe and they can't afford Microsoft software that you have to buy once every 4-5 years? I'd understand taking such actions in Bosnia or Kosovo but they probably use pirated Microsoft software so meh...
I've got the feeling Ballmer is going to go for an extended Swiss vacation real soon now.
And he will feel like graciously giving up 90% on license fees and whatnot, all in a period of general feel-goodyness.
At least, until they still say "No thanks", at which point the hotel better have its plush chairs bolted to the floor.
