Chilean presidency webpage hacked

Peruvian nationalists strike
Tue Nov 06 2007, 08:54

A HACKER broke into the Web page of Chile's presidency and planted the flag of neighbouring Peru.

The intruder left a message "Long live Peru," followed by a swear word as well as the Peruvian flag. The Santiago daily El Mercurio reported that officials believe the hacker was a Peruvian. Sheesh, they must have been up all night working that one out.

According to AP, the site was out of order for about 18 hours but is now up and running.

Carlos Portales, political director of the Chilean foreign ministry, said the incident is being investigated. He does not think it it was a specific attack against Chile as it has happened to other Web pages, including some from the United States government, the Vatican.

Chile and Peru are normally friendly. The last time they had a war was in the 19th century although a dispute over maritime boundaries has been developing.

Paddington bear has been ruled out as a suspect as he has an alibi and is a fictional character.

Sticky fingers

Does a fictional character need a real alibi, or is a fictional one good enough?

Plus, if Paddington had been responsible, there'd be marmalade all over the keyboard.
