CES toys get hot and heavy

CES 2008 Offroad wheelchairs and exploded PS3s
Wednesday, 9 January 2008, 21:20

THE TOYS AT CES are coming hot and heavy, but most of the good ones do not have massive screens or dancing booth babes. Here are a few of them.

alt='iogear_dl_kvm'

One of the first is the GCS1787, a two port KVM from IOGear. What is special about this one? Remember my bitches about the horrid Dell 3007? Well, one of the biggest problems that the beast had was that there were no affordable dual link DVI KVMs on the market. Well, IOGear is about to solve that problem, and it will be out 'soon' for a street price in the $300s. It will switch 7.1 audio as well, so the only thing I can really ask for is a four port model.

The next one up is called the Imation Oddesy, it is a removable storage unit with cartridges up to 320G. If you look closely, it is more or less an external SATA to USB cable wit a 2.5" HD, but it is well packaged, and if you are not a hardcore geek, it might be a good thing to have.

alt='rambus_ps3_open'

That brings us to Rambus, or at least their stand. It had an exploded PS3 in it, but not the older model, the shrunk version. When the PS3 had it's price drop a few months ago, one of the reasons Sony claimed it happened was a chip and board shrink. This is what the new one looks like, the price drop had nothing to do with drain circling sales figures, honest.

alt='tankchair'

Last up we have the TankChair from TankChair. This is a motorized offroad wheelchair that will most likely go places your truck won't. It was made for the wife of the owner of TankChair after she was paralyzed in an accident. The idea? Let her go more or less anywhere, including camping.

They are for sale to the public later this month, and will cost $15,600, any customizations are extra. In addition to being a worthy idea, it could be a lot of fun for people with way way to much money and a love for toys. ยต

I dunno

$300 for a KVM? why not simply buy a second monitor for the money?

Drain circling sales?

That must be what we call selling 1.2 million units in North America alone in just six weeks these days.

Tank chair fills me with villainous glee.

I foresee Dr. Evil driving that chair in the next Austin Powers.

A lot of reasons....

Not only the monitor.... the same keyboard, mouse and audio out.... priceless!
a kvm for less space.... for me, space is the word!
With 6, 7 pc running at all times, I have a ATEN Masterview with 8 to 2. Having the possibility to have only 2 monitors, 2 keyboard and 2 mouses, one for my usual work pc and the other "pack" to my test machines...
