Sourcefire buys open-source AV firm Clam

New sauce of protection
Fri Aug 17 2007, 18:52
SOURCEFIRE HAS said it is buying ClamAV, the open-source antivirus and anti-malware project.

The firm will fold the acquired tools in with its Snort threat management product. There's more on the deal and its significance in an FAQ here.

Sophos technology consultant and oft-quoted expert Graham Cluley told The INQUIRER that deeper integration with web filtering could be the next step for Clam.

"We compete with McAfee and Symantec and don't see a lot of Clam but its handy to have lots of options and over the years they've improved their detection rates. They're not in the top tier of independently reviewed programs but it's an interesting approach, especially if used in addition to other AV solutions."

In a note, analyst group The451 said the buy "Almost immediately Clam will begin to see engineering and technical support from the Sourcefire team, meaning that issues involved in Clam's supply chain - detecting, identifying, writing signatures, testing and pushing out new signatures - will be streamlined and improved." µ

Q7. Will “ClamAV for Windows” send any sensitive data from my computer to the cloud?

A7. ClamAV for Windows sends information about the files its scanning back to the cloud. This information is in the form of SHA hashes and file heuristics. Currently, this information is only collected for Windows PE files, or in other terms what most people "refer to as executable files" [ EXEs's but they really did not want to say so.]. No information is collected for other types of files, like Word, Excel, or PDF. Additionally, in some situations the entire PE file will be uploaded to the Cloud to determine if it is malicious.
