Now Sun taps fingers waiting for AMD chips

The Constellation waits for Barcelona
Tuesday, 26 June 2007, 16:16
SUN IS waiting for AMD to roll out its Barcelona processors just like Cray did t'other week, it seems.

According to a report on PC World, Sun wants to ship out its Constellation super server and will introduce it at the Dresden International Supercomputing Conference today.

But it will have to wait for AMD to furnish it with functioning quad core "Barcelona" which must be causing a spot of angst for the Sun team.

Sun wants to go and give IBM a big kicking and deliver a Constellation machine which will give Big Glue's Blue Gene series a bloody nose.

Perhaps Jonathan S at Sun in Sunnyvale could catch the number 31 bus to AMD headquarters and tap on Hector Ruiz' door. Informed sources say that if Constellation launches with current AMD chips, it won;t have a chance to compete with the FLOPs that Power 6 offers. Plus the SMP and IO scaling throughput is not going to be the bee's bollocks either.

Last week channel sources told the INQ they were expecting production quantities of the Barcelona processors in mid-August. We now wonder whether Asia's biggest supercomputer, the Tokyo Institute of Technology 50+ FLOP machine with nearly 10,000 Opteron cores and daughter cards for Barcelona chips, will be affected by these apparent glitches. ยต
