Barcelona speeds up to 2.6GHz

Opterons phixed, Phenoms phloating
Wed Oct 03 2007, 11:14

WORD HAD DRIFTED in from the far east that AMD will be launching Barcelona based Opterons at 2.6GHz.

As Fudo pointed out yesterday, the Phenom SKU will be a bit higher, 2.8 or more, with 3.0 coming in January if they don't squeak it in this year.

It will be interesting to see how the B2s perform with all the bug fixed in place, that will be the key. µ

Late???

I have to laugh when people say the K10 is late!

It took INTC 3 years to answer the K8, and deliver the C2D. Now, after only about a year, AMD is ramping their next design, trumping INTC once again.

When is Nehalem coming - 2009? Just to deliver the memory controller and CSI feature found in the 2003 version of Opteron???

Now who's late to the party?

BA=B1(=B2)?

BA (under)performance is literally the same as B1 even with bug fix. I don't expect any difference with B2. Performance tweaks and architechural changes can take up many months from implementation to debugging alone. Phenom=K10=Barcelona. Furthermore Penryn just made life even more harder for AMD. We haven't begun to talk about Nehalem yet.

Competition?

Even if this doesn't take the performance crown I hope the midrange offers good performance vs. price. High end markets are just a small % of the sales, although it gets the most publicity (understandable) normal folks can't splurge 1k on a cpu.

Look out Intel!

Up to 3GHz on B2 stepping only? Can't wait for B3, B4 and so on... We'll be seeing 4GHz soon enough!

stop waiting AMD!

ibm is not in the x86 game, amd is!
u should move to 45 nm as soon as possible, at worse 6 months after intel, not later! even better, skip one process to 32 nm! what r u waiting for? IBM?

blotched oatmeal?

For Gamers. SPEED is Number 1. For Ultimate, GREATER Complexity of usefulness IN Processor,is Number 1.

Like Single birth, it just squirts out, However, TWINS is Hard Chore with Quadruplets, You get all your work done in one shot.

However, with triplets,(X3) like bad cessarian, where kid looks lot like Blotched Oatmeal, You can Never Tell Whoms' that would have been.

waiting waiting waiting

I have had enough of all these press releases when are we going to see AMD Phenom chips in the shops. Its all good to hear about but when do get to buy these chips or should I bite the bullet and go Intel, no I'll wait a bit longer my s939 has a lot of life left.

it's obvius

that amd has no chance in this round. Take a look at the speeds that a year old core 2 marchitecture achieves by overclocking and everything should be clear to you. Do you think that Intel has been only eating the fruits of their success in the last 15 months while doing nothing? They have all the products ready, they're just waiting to see what AMD has to offer. They don't want to give us too much, as this would shorten the life of their products. There is no need for them to advance if there is no competing product better then their own. I hope that AMD will at least make them run for their money by giving us products with good performance/value. Unless a miracle happens there is no chance for amd to take the performance crown in the following year or so.

needs a bigger miracle

I'm not an Intel guy. I mean other than the Pentium MMX I had back in the day, it's all been AMD till now.

We've all heard Penryns will be high clocked. The Phenom FX (probably what.. $1000?) will "only" reach 2.8 GHz.. at most 3.0 GHz.. while the Yorkfield has already been demoed at 3.2 GHz. The potential of Penryns just look too damn good for AMD to compete in the same arena! Honestly, unless some bigger miracle can happen with AMD, I really don't see them wowing anybody. With Nehalem out in 2008/2009, is there any hope for AMD at all?

That said, I'm hoping to see how the mainstream phenom quads will compete with the penryn quads of the same price range.

What^^^???

What was that about?

Anyway, i'm glad that AMD is getting back in the game but i'm pretty sure that there not going to be completely competative till they have a few refreshes to iron out bugs a crank speed. it a matter of weather they can do that at a rate equal to what intel with there penryn.

"Inject the Phenom" AMD!!!

Yeah Right!

Intel planned their penryn launch to match those speeds months ago. They've got pretty big headroom on their 45nm and they are just waiting for AMD to lay down their cards. Just my 0.02.

hopeful

I'd like to see AMD compete, but I'm pessimistic after such a long delay. All I can say is that everyone should be happy if AMD comes out with a winner because none of us (unless we work for intel) want an intel only game... good luck AMD.

TDP?

2.6 Barcelona is an SE with 120W TDP, but what about the 2.8 (or 3.0 in Q1) Phenom? Same TDP, or higher?

go AMD!

yes, we need AMD. even if they won't have the most powerful CPU I will stick with them, just to support competition. AMD products have always been good to me, and I don't buy top of the line anyway, so who cares Intel monopolist has more money to throw at R&D - good luck with that, I'm not buying anything from you.

Cheap stuff sells

Who cares if AMD will be 10% slower if it will be 15% cheaper?! Cheap stuff sells (c) , ask Walmart. And did all speed fricks forgot the wisdom that two computers are equal if their perforances are within the factor of 1.5? Are they always buying new computer each time something 10% faster appear on the market? Not? Then shut the hell up. BTW, Mike Magee's, old laptop still running Word 2.0 for DOS :-)

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.
