AMD runs out of Newisys Opteron servers

Wed Jan 15 2003, 10:40
AS WE REPORTED last week, AMD has a drive, codenamed Beach Head, to seed 1U pizza box Opterons into the system builder market.

The system builders had until the end of December to order the 500 units available, and it looks as though it met that target, according to internal documents we saw last week.

That's confirmed by a message on the debian-developer, dealing with the up-and-coming X86-64 technology, by Marc Miller of Advanced Micro Devices.

The message is here.

In it, Miller said: "There's also the problem of hardware... there just aren't that many systems out there that we could spare a few. Some of our closest partners are sharing systems over remote connections."

The ramp continues... µ
