'Logic bomber' hauled before the beak

Sack me and the data gets it
Fri Dec 22 2006, 08:48
A COMPUTER administrator, worried about his future in a big medical company, planted a logic bomb in the network in case he was made redundant, US prosecutors claim.

Yung-Hsun Lin, 50, faces two charges of computer fraud and expected to be in court on January 3.

Lin worked for Medco Health Solutions which was planning a round of redundancies. Prosecutors claim that Lin designed and installed a logic bomb which would have deleted all data from the 70 targeted servers by modifying computer code. It was set to detonate automatically on April 23, 2004 which was Lin's birthday. It didn't work because of a coding error.

Apparently Lin was kept on by the company but continued to tinker with the bomb to see if he could get it to go off next year. It was discovered and neutralised by the company. Lin was arrested at his home on Tuesday morning.

Lin will deny introducing any malicious programming into the computer system. His defence will be that it was too obvious and he knew such an action could be quickly linked to him.
