ATI R520 AGP cancelled

X850 XT PE remains the fastest
Thu Sep 29 2005, 05:06
WE SAW some earlier roadmaps that were implying that ATI plans to do R520, Radeon X1800 in AGP variation but it turns out that the company dropped its original plan.

PCIe is picking up so fast that ATI realised that not that many people will go for AGP version of the card, or that's what appears to be the logic. Radeon X850 XT PE will remain the fastest Radeon and for all of you who were planning to plug new AGP R520 card in your AG setup this will come as a cold shower on a cold morning. Yes, you will need to replace your beloved motherboard as well if you want to go R520.

We already wrote that RV515, Radeon X1300 comes as an AGP card and there is a strong indication that there will be AGP versions of RV530 cards, Radeon X1600 as well.

ATI can make all of its chips AGP compliant using its well known Venetian Rialto chip that can translate PCIe instructions in AGP. Nvidia already dropped out from the AGP high end market as it didn't want to release the Geforce 7800 GTX. Its fastest AGP card still available is the Geforce 6800 Ultra. µ
