Digital printing gets faster

Mass production looking cheaper
Thu May 29 2008, 09:41

THE commercial printing industry is about to get a kick in the teeth from some new superfast colour ink-jet printing technology from Eastman Kodak.

While the print industry has been gutted by print on demand, one area that it has been able to make an living on is colour, which still has to use off-set methods to be viable.

Now Eastman Kodak have come up with a process called Stream which is a continuous-feed inkjet colour press.

Not only can it churn out pages faster, it could give the off-set process a run for its money in terms of cost and speed.

Currently full-colour digital presses can manage 120 pages a minute at a cost of six cents a page. Stream costs less than a penny a page and goes like the clappers in a medieval epidemic.

True the quality is not as good, but it is so close that few punters would know the difference and is a lot more convenient, Eastman Kodak thinks.

Stream will hit the market in early 2009 and could mean the death of many off-set printing companies which have managed to scratch together a living fighting over the small amount of off-set work they can get. µ

Fastness of print?

I mean colour-fastness, not speed, of course.

Inkjets traditionally use water-based inks that are not very permanent - leave your printed copy of the company accounts out in the rain, you'll see what I mean.

Clearly, the print process must have fast-drying ink, or it would not sustain those print speeds, but I hope that Eastman Kodak has resolved the permanence problem. It won't look good to print customers if their precious leaflets turn to rainbow mush in a light shower!

Fire GL Medical Settings.

To increase your density to Medical imaging Level with ANY FireGL Card, simply look in advanced section & check 10 bit medical Image Quality Box.

Its' one of Larger secrets people just don't look For.

For Small Color Press Walk in Print shop, catering to Apartment Monthlys with pre pasted boards or even downloadable booklet pages, this could really save lot in prep time, seperation & plate burning, & union Labour costs.(Computer techs are NON Union by statutory Law).

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
