Microsoft contemplated bid for Wall Street Journal

AN UNLIKELY UNION that would have had Microsoft and General Electric owning Dow Jones and so the Wall Street Journal has fallen apart at the last moment, said the er, Wall Street Journal.

Apparently General Electric and the Vole thought owning Dow Jones would help CNBC it compete with News Corporation.

Microsoft has a long tradition of dabbling in the worlds of publishing and TV.

For example, not only did it back Salon, but it also produced Vole's Big Dick - a risible attempt to compete with the OED and Collins in defining the meaning of words, complete with pictures.

Then there was Volopedia, or Encarta as Microsoft called it. This all from a software company that didn't build word counts into its word processors until journalists pointed out they didn't know when to stop or how to cost up their reviews. µ
