AMD and Intel haven't got a clue

Letter'o't'Week People buy holes, not drills

A GOOGLE SEARCH for ‘AMD barcelona' brings up a paid addy with the following link.

The flash show that is found by clicking ‘Learn More' doesn't really teach more. The diagrams are something only a geek could love, while the pictures and text contain absolutely no real information which a geek really needs….

I am reminded of the old marketing axiom…'People don't buy a drill…they buy a hole.' AMD still hasn't figured out how to package their technologies together to create compelling selling points. In fact, the last time a semiconductor company did this, it was Intel's Blue Man group…people really did buy the Blue Man group processor. For better or worse, Intel is just as pathetic in comparison…I mean the Viiv ad with not just 1 picture, but 8 pictures of the same annoying punk jumping around a magazine ad? Is that jerky photo sequence really telling the story of the intel embedded graphics frame rate? .

What's needed? How about….

1. AMD linking with Microsoft to sell an X2-R600 based ‘Flight Simulator' machine. How about cooping with MS for an X10 gaming campaign - which really attacks Apple on it's weak point (something Bill G should salivate about). .

2. Co advertising with IMSI or some other home design software company to create a ‘Home Design' machine, featuring ray-trace rendering. .

3. AMD Live playing off on the ability of a dual/quad core to real-time decode h.264, a la HD DVD or Blueray, seems both camps would pitch in coop money at this point in their desperate struggle to become defacto standard. .

The point being, I'm not sure exactly why I want a quad core or R600, but I do have imagination that has been sparked by what a PC can become…AMD just needs to spark the same in others via mass media. .

Do people not talk about the ‘killer app' anymore? .

Anyway, that's my 2 bits….

Do you think the move was justified?
