A VERY interesting chap called David Freeman talked about emotions in computer games this morning. The chap has a Hollywood background and at the same time now he is freelancing for many games including hot titles such as FEAR or Need for speed, one of them. One of the real points is that the Hollywood background teaches a course in story writing to make games feel better than ever.

He spent an hour talking about emotions and techniques that can make games more alive. There are so many small things that can be added.

He reckons you first have to define the emotions and personality of a client and before you can write a script.

He made a good reference to Half Life 2 and the Alex girl who follows you in the game. She is a hot techie, and that is one of the key elements of the character. She can also get emotional about a pet robot. The emotion can affect game play as the girl will get upset because of loss of its robot Dog and after that she cannot fight as well as she is shattered by emotions. µ
