$3 billion pledged to wipe out malaria

Bill Gates chips in a bob or two
Friday, 26 September 2008, 16:01

WORLD LEADERS and charitable types have promised close to $3 billion (£1.6 billion) to wipe out Malaria and other deadly diseases by 2015.

Between-jobs actor and ex-Microsoft boss Bill Gates managed, along with his wife Melinda, to find $168 million (£91.6million) down the back of the sofa which they added to the pot.

Gates trumped Britain's pledge of £40 million to support the cause, as he sat next to Gordon Broon at the UN. Gordo then dashed off the Washington to, um, help save the world from financial meltdown.

Broon's poonds will be used to support the supply of affordable medicines, at least £5 million a year to support research and offered to supply 20 million of the 125 million mosquito nets needed in affected areas.

"We need innovation, new drugs, and the most dramatic thing we need is vaccine," Gates told the BBC. "If we build on this momentum, we can save million of lives and chart a long-term course for eradication of this disease."

According to the World Health Organisation, malaria still kills more than a million people every year and it is hoped that the money will seriously reduce this figure by providing better and more affordable medicines in the next three years.

U2's Bonio had something to say about the whole thing but we couldn't bring ourselves to watch the video featuring his smug face saving the world yet again. µ

Bring back DDT

Water borne illness could have been eradicated decades ago if it wasn't for the bad science that led to the banning of DDT.

It's estimated that the banning of DDT has killed more people than all the bombs dropped in WWII. Of course, we in the wealthy nations don't have to worry about Malaria, yet, we impose a ban on DDT because supposedly it "hurts birds". Nice. Birds are more important than people?

A greater good

I think its nice of them and would like to say thanks, not that I have malaria personally, but its the right thing to do considering that it could spread to South London shortly given the rate at which global warming is progressing.

You are coming across a little peevish there Stewart about Bongo, you should keep your powder dry for things that really matter like electronics and stuff.

if they were serious

they could use this.... http://miraclemineral.org/
Jim humble actually approached Bill's foundation but they won't talk to him because it can't get FDA approval, which is strange because it works!
If anyone uses it in Africa then big pharma won't send them any more 'cheap' medicines.

Oh Look Gordies Got Money

Not dissing the cause, but how the hell does G.B find £40 million to splash around when people in his own country are facing the problem of heating this winter and hundreds of thousands below the poverty line. Time to give to your own !!!!!!!!!

What about DDT?

If these folks are serious about eradicating malaria, they need to kill the mosquito's. DDT is the MOST effective (& _safest_) pesticide for achieving this goal.

It's all about balancing risks vs. rewards. I am not claiming that DDT is "safe" (for wildlife, humans, etc.), but the alternative is clearly pretty grim -- >1MM dead / annum.

Oh well, most of them (i.e. malaria victims) are poor Africans and other extremely poor folks from around the around the world -- I guess we see about whom the environmentalist nazis in the US are most concerned. Bunnies, frogs, etc.

Proof

If this Miracle Mineral does what it says and its a natural substance then FDA approval isn't a big issue.

More people should test it, to prove his claims.

Bill Gates isn't one to throw millions away on something thats not been proven to work, by any expert.
But he could always try google now, they might try it.

No MiracleMineral!

Before any of you follow Kev (the previous commenter) to an early grave, have a look at the chemical safety fact sheet for the product he's been suckered by ...

http://www.npi.gov.au/database/substance-info/profiles/21.html

Yes, his 'miraclemineral' is a disinfectant ... in the way BLEACH is. Maybe we should all start sipping bleach?

He's promoting a powerful oxidizer as a miracle cure in the age of ANTI-oxidants for health.

This is the same chemical used to chlorinate drinking water, but you're a fool if you consume it in any large quantity, or let yourself get exposed to the chemical in the form of a gas.

Although I hear it was fairly useful in this form on the battlefields during World War 1.

Gee i wonder why the FDA won't approve it. OH YA! It's because the FDA requires scientific studies that prove the effectiveness and safety of chemicals before they can be sold as drugs.

It is not safe, it is not effective, it will not get approval.
