A niche called Wanda?

TEXAS INSTRUMENTS earlier this year announced concept PDAs which include three communications standards: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GSM/GPRS.

It looks like a number of vendors will be showing them off at the Computex 2003 show. The concept, called Wanda and standing for wireless any network digital assistant, will be built into PDAs and allow a better chance of people connecting to an existing connection, TI said.

The concept - or reference PDA - will use Microsoft's Pocket PC software, and is a so-called "proof of concept" device for others to learn from and build.

The device uses TI's OMAP 1510 aplication processor, a .13 micron Bluettoth chip, the BRF 6100, and an 802.11b MAC/baseband processor, the TNETW1100B.

The GSM/GPRS chipset is the TI TCS2100, which integrates a complete GPRS/GSM protocol stack, the firm said.

Meanwhile, Intel unveiled its plans for Computex, indicating the show is getting a boost from one of the bigger vendors. µ
