Vodafone fined €76 million for fone tapping

Beware Greeks bearing gifs

GREEK organisation the IISA (Independent Information Security Authority) fined the local subsidiary of Vodafone €76 million.

The IISA is a wing of the Greek government, which regulates protection of privacy. The fine follows a big spying scandal back in 2004, during the Olympics in Athens.

Vodafone tapped conversations of around 100 people, including Greece's prime minister, cabinet, journalists and activists.

Vodafone rejected the decision of the IISA, claiming the company actually discovered the tapping and reported it to the government back in 2004, and announced that it will appeal.

IISA said the reason for the fine was the fact that Vodafone removed the illegal software from its system before the tap was reported, and a later investigation could not track who installed the software or who actually ordered tapping 100 movers and shakers in Greece. µ
