KOREAN GIANT Samsung Electronics says it has developed a 1.8-inch 64GB solid state drive (SSD) flash drive.

The firm says the SSD is based on an eight gigabit (Gb) single-level-cell (SLC) NAND, which provides significantly higher performance over conventional SSDs.

It reckons that by using the new SLCs it has boosted read and write performance of by 20 per cent and 60 per cent respectively, over its previous 32GB models.

The development, sasy Samsung, accelerates the demise of the conventional spinning disk drive.

The firm said it plans to start mass production of the 64GB SSDs in the second quarter of this year. ยต
