GERMAN SEMI GIANT Infineon said that a phone using a 65 nanometre CMOS chip it designed has worked without hanging up.

The phone contains an astonishing 30 million transistors, said Infineon, with products using its CMOS tech available at the end of this year.

The 30 million trannies are squeezed into an area of 33 square millimetres which integrates all sorts of fab digital and analogue circuitry.

The phone tech is as a result of the R&D alliance which includes IBM, Chartered, Infineon and Samsung. The mobile chip was designed by Infineon and fabbed up at Chartered Singapore. µ

* INFINEON'S DRAM arm, Qimonda, will be listed on the NYSE in the second half of this year.
