A JAPANESE FIRM will start selling a two legged robot 16.5 centimetres high (0.0000890929 nautical miles) this July.

According to Nikkei.net, Tomy will cost ¥31,290 ($258 or so) and will be sold first in Japan and then worldwide.

So what can little Tomy do?

Not that much - it has apparently the ability to move its joins independently, using 19 semiconductors. And it walks smoothly and doesn't need a remote control because it has voice recognition software which recognises 10 commands.

The report doesn't say whether Tiny Tot Tomy answers back. If not, that's a boon. We know plenty of human bipeds that don't recognise even one command and if you try say things like "Go boil your heid", "stick it up your bum" or worse.

At $250 perhaps this is rather an expensive version of Barbie or Ken but perhaps will generate a customised clothes market, with poorer owners dressing their Tomy in chav getup, and Jock McFrock kitting his Tomy with a kilt. µ
