AMD's new driver holds surprises

2600 X2 a mystery
Tuesday, 11 September 2007, 16:01
AMD'S NEW Catalyst driver for ATI cards contains a few fixes but also a couple of surprises - new card names.

The latest driver revision, numbered 7.9, includes fixes for all versions of Windows as well as specific improvements related to Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, the demo for which is out this week.

However, in the configuration lines the following cards are mentioned:

Radeon HD 2900 Pro
Radeon HD 2350 Series
Radeon HD 2600 X2 Series

We can fairly easily guess what the first two are - low-clocked 2900 XT, low-clocked 2400 - but what the 2600 X2 constitutes we're really not sure. A higher-clocked version of the 2600, or even the much-rumoured CrossFire-on-a-card version?

We would expect ATI to launch these cards in the next month or so, given their insertion into this month's driver update. Stay tuned, then. ยต
