AOL's major email outage sorted

Millions of emails backlogged
Fri Jun 02 2006, 17:11
AOL HAS BEEN clearing a huge backlog of mail after a "software glitch" prevented millions of emails from being sent yesterday.

For much of the day, AOL users were not able to send or receive anything and a backlog of emails started to build up at a rate of 500,000 a minute.

The outfit said that the problem had been fixed but it was taking a long time to clear the backlog.

During that time however AOL insisted that its software woes were only minor. When hacks started to ring up, spokespeople got increasingly cross that the term "massive internal system failure" seemed to be bandied about and insisted that the problem was small.
