Website name is anatomically too precise

Grapefruit for small mercies
Monday, 13 February 2006, 06:53
A WEBSITE which promotes grapefruit has been banned from registering its name in Vietnam because in the local lingo it is a rude word.

The Vietnam Internet Network Information Centre has stepped into prevent a site operating under the name www.buoi.com.vn because the word for grapefruit, Buoi, without a proper tone marking can mean penis.

Of course with the web address system a proper tone marking is out of the question and the VINIC thinks that you have to assume that surfers have filthy minds.

According to Vietnamese regulations, names of websites must not contain words that "violate the national interest or are not in accordance with social ethics, lifestyle and national culture". This extends to rude fruit.
