GOOGLE IS TEAMING up with Liberty Global and HSBC to unite the three billion people still not connected to the internet in developing countries such as Africa, with the rest of the world.
The INQ has already brought you news of the underground cable which will hopefully connect over 21 countries together – now Google is stepping in to do its bit.
The aim of this project is to develop a system which will bring high-speed internet service using a 03b Networks system.
The 03b Networks system has been developed to use satellites which will hopefully give those in third world countries the same 'quality' high-speed service the richer countries receive.
This high-speed service, which is expected to be up and running some time in 2010, aims to tap into the increasing mobile phone usage in the developing world, targeting mainly Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.
Sixteen satellites are already in production, although apparently there are more in the pipeline.
The company hopes that this new system will bring locally generated content to the the unconnected, as well as e-learning and the encouragement of social and economic growth in the developing world. µ
Africa... is not a country, I know what you mean but you're an journalist and supposed not to make those mistakes.
The project is called O3B (letter, not zero). Meaning: Other 3 Billions.
