Bugtraq competitor opens its doors to all

Back to grassroots for security information

BUGTRAQ HAS DRAWN enough flak over the years to down an entire airforce. Now Secunia thinks it has gone too far and has decided to launch a competing service. A Secunia representative blasted SecurityFocus, the Bugtraq host, saying that it "has failed to be loyal to the people, who served them since 1997 and made them what they were until last year."

Last year SecurityFocus was acquired by Symantec and, according to Secunia, "SecurityFocus and CERT deliberately delays and censors the information disclosed on BugTraq and in their vulnerability database." Secunia claims that security experts and system admins don't want to be left without information that could lead to them being unable to create a patch or, worse still, their systems being compromised.

The advisory set up by Secunia is apparently based on more than 200 different sources, with VulnWatch and Full-Disclosure providing much of the information. The company claims that its security list should save having to subscribe to dozens of vendor and security lists. The service is free. µ
