THE RACE to produce perpendicular hard drives is on with a vengeance, with both Hitachi and Toshiba announcing their plans to make them.

Those two companies are also likely to be first off the block with products this year - according to nikkei.net Tosh will make 80GB and 40GB models, while Hitachi will create a 2.5-inch drive at 120GB.

But, said the wire today, Fujitsu will also create a perpendicular drive with 200GB capacity, although that won't be out until early 2007.

According to nikkei.net, Fujitsu's drive will use two platters in a 2.5-inch format. µ
