MICROSOFT DIDN'T GET the idea from Google or anything. Of course not. It's idea to put the Earth online was seen as some sort of public duty, we imagine.
It even teamed up with some Frenchies to get the job done.
Your virtual trip around Not Google Earth begins here. µ

Notice how the software is 6.0? This is nothing new, and has been out almost as long as google earth.

Microsoft had R&D going for this thing since 2003, but hey, why bother doing research...
So I headed over to the Virtual Earth website to see what is so new and exciting with the Vole's new product.

In a word NOTHING.

You want to buy it, you want to develop for it, Microsoft has something for you, but if you just want to see something similar to Google Earth... SORRY if you don't have any money the Vole is not interested in you
let just see now how long it take them to copy google sky... and integrate flight simulator in their virtual earth product.
Listen, I hate the "vole" as much as the next guy, but if you actually look at the website you linked to, you'd notice that it was version 6 of the virtual earth map control. Its been around for quite a while.

The other thing you fail to point out is that Virtual Earth competes more directly with Google Maps than with Google Earth. So please tone down on the FUD.
The related windows live local I have found to be handy because they have aerial photos (switch to "bird's eye view") in addition to the road maps and satellite footage.
They are nice for the extra detail.

I like MS Live Maps for the geography labels and elevation shading. I didn't know I enjoyed hiking in the Winston Churchill Range of mountains so much.

I prefer Google maps for the routing though.
