Cray describes Red Storm machines as the low end of its product range, and the statement said that the machines, which use the AMD Opteron, will be released later this year.

The firm said that Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center is the first "disclosed" customer for the new products, hinting that there's several more such orders in the pipeline.

It added that until Red Storm and Cray X1E and XD1 products start appearing in the second half of this year, the X1 system is its major revenue source. µ
