AMD sets up shop in Saratoga

Having a fab time in Malta
Friday, 31 October 2008, 11:17

AMD WILL BE occupying some new digs at the Saratoga Technology and Energy Park (STEP) in Malta, taking up about 930 square metres of office space while it waits for its $4.6 billion chip fab to be built.

The newly-formed AMD subsidiary, AMD Fab Technologies US, will be just one of several business tenants occupying the 9750 square metre space at STEP next to the Fab site on Luther Forest Technology Campus when its lease begins on December 1st. Initially only 12 AMD-ers will get all the office space to themselves, but apparently the number of staffers should swell to about 40.

The building itself is actually owned by The United Group of Companies in Troy and CEO Michael J Uccellini can hardly seem to contain his excitement about the Chip boys moving in. “In the Albany marketplace that’s a big tenant. For that tenant to also be AMD, that’s very big” he gushed.

An AMD spinner told the Albany Business Review the firm’s lease would be for two years. Construction of the Luther Forest fab is set to begin next year and last 18 months.

Upon completion, the fab, which will be a joint venture between the newly formed Foundry Co and AMD, will employ over 1,400 people directly, as well as creating related jobs in the area. µ
