Five million Iphones could be sold in three months

Piper Jaffray has a guess
Tuesday, 23 September 2008, 10:42

AN INDUSTRY BEAN COUNTER reckons that Apple will sell more than five million Iphone 3Gs in the next quarter.

Piper Jaffray believes the company has added another four million units to the million it sold in the first weekend.

It is a guess. Apple will reveal the formal totals in about a month when it reports earnings for its fourth fiscal quarter.

Piper Jaffray said the difference between the 3G and the earlier models is the huge increase in the number of countries that are now officially selling the handset.

Apple has said that it wants to sell 10 million of the toys in 2008 and, if Piper Jaffray's guess is correct, then it is on target.

However the guess does not include returns. The iPhone 3G was blighted with networking and hardware problems. These have now been fixed, but it is not clear how much damage this did to the brand. µ

Yes, but returns ...

word on the street -- actually word from an Apple tech -- is that a full 50% of new iPhones are being returned -- constant lockups, abrupt restarts, slow app operation, etc. etc.
