Intel's complex desktop chipset plans

Sys integrators, start juggling!

THE INTRODUCTION of the 533MHz front side bus inevitably means chipset changes and additional Intel motherboards to support the new Pentium 4 CPUs being introduced this year.

This makes for some complex jiggery pokery on the latest channel roadmaps seen by the INQUIRER.

Obviously, you have to match the right CPU with the right chipset/motherboard, and this is exactly what Intel is projecting for its boxed products in the second and third quarters of this year.

The 2.40GHz CPU will be supported by the i850E, and by two Intel boards - the D850MD2 and the D850MV2. These boards will also support the 2.53GHz and 2.50GHz CPUs introduced in Q3.

The 2.26GHz, 2.20GHz, 2GHz, 1.90GHz and 1.80GHz will be supported by the Intel 845E, the 845, and the 845G chipsets, with a total of six motherboards - the D845BG, the D845PT, the D845GBV, the D845GRG, the D845HV and the D845WN. Again, some of these chipsets and boards will support the 2.40GHz product coming in the third quarter.

The 1.70GHz Pentium 4 Celeron, will be supported by the i845GL, and by two new motherboards the D845GLAD and the D845GLLY.

These two Celeron Pentium 4 boards will also support the 1.80GHz when it arrives in the third quarter this year.

Dealers and system integrators are going to have quite a complex time choosing the right products for the right systems during the course of this year, it appears.µ
