The initiative is all about saving energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions and all that other planet-friendly green stuff and features massive names such as Dell, HP, IBM, Lenovo, the World Wildlife Fund and Microsoft not to mention a dozen more.
Businesses and individual users alike are being appealed to by the intiative which is concerned by the massive amount of energy wasted by the average desktop PC: "The Climate Savers Computing Initiative is setting a new 90 percent efficiency target for power supplies, which if achieved, will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 54 million tons per year," the group claims.
All walks of IT-life are represented by the group, it claims, including environmental types, energy companies, retailers, chip makers and government agencies. It's hoped by the group that by 2010 it will have cut gas emissions to the equivalent of sweeping 11 million cars off the road.
Intel's Pat Gelsinger reckons "the commitment of the member companies that are here with us today is a firm statement" about making a significant and positive environmental impact.
