COMPUTER MAKER Tyan Computer Corporation said it has begun building computers using non-x86 based processors for the first time.

Its S6741 and S6791 machines use XLR 700 and XLR 500 processors dersigned by fabless Raza Microelectronics, Inc. The machines are built for network security applications.

Tyan reckons the multi-cored and multi-threaded XLR processors, have enabled it to build "the most feature rich and high performance solutions for advanced network security applications."

Tyan says Raza's XLR processor architecture supports up to eight MIPS64-compatible cores for a total of 32 threads or virtual CPUs. And it claims that its S6741 and S6791 platforms are able to manage these use oif these threads to reduced latency to improve overall throughput.

Tyan's S6741 is build around Raza's XLR 500 series processor. It incorporates 6 x 1Gigabit Ethernet ports with LAN-by-pass, PCI-X expansion slots for additional acceleration/compression cards or a LAN card for additional Ethernet ports.

The S6791 uses the XLR 700 series processor to address the high-end security appliance market. It can optionally be configured to support up to 14 x 1Gigabit Ethernet ports and has the same expansion capabilities as the S6741.

Each platform includes an extensive range of peripherals, large caches, and accelerated interconnects around the XLR processor. In addition to the platforms, Tyan said it also provides a variety of copper and optical interfaces for the platforms. ยต
