City of Vienna dumps Linux for Vista
AFTER BEING SHOWERED with bogger praise for deciding to migrate local government and council’s to Gnu/Linux plans a while back, the City of Vienna seems to have now turned its back on open sauce.
And suffer the little children, because child day care centres will be the first to be reconfigured with, shiver, Microsoft Vista.
Seven-hindred and twenty computers will be part of the initial Linux purge, with the fairly feeble excuse being given that the OS doesn’t allow a very specific application, used for testing kids’ language skills, to run. Active X only currently works on the Vole’s Web browsers.
But even though Mozzerrella is currently working on a fix, which would in all probability make the rejig redundant within a year, the City of Vienna has decided that it would rather splurge almost eight million Euros of taxpayers’ on licenses for the Vole’s Vista. Not only that, but dumping Open Sauce for the irritating Volish OS will cost the city another 105,000 Euro according to Austrian IT news site Futurezone.
Vienna’s public administration workers have until recently had the choice of whether to use a GNU/Linux desktop, running Wienux or a Microsoft desktop. Most chose to go with Mightysoft’s option, but the majority of those who chose GNU/Linux were those in the children’s daycare centres who are now being forced to change.
Politicians, however, deny that Vienna has turned its back on Open Sauce, with one Social Democratic Party member, Siegfried Lindenmayr, telling Futurezone: "Vienna has been using Open Source software for the last twenty years and will continue to do so. µ

I wonder if that 8 million euros include the cost of hardware that needs replacing to run that bloated OS called Vista. Ah well I give it no more then two years before they realize that the cost wasn't worth it. 

I'm sure someone is getting kickbacks for this not to mention Mightysoft is going to tell the world how super duper amazing Vista is ... Look Vienna converted their systems for Linux to Vista see we are better, blah blah...

Linuex is unix & sold in ultraBombproof versions for Government. It uses both standard buottom to top column reading with abilty to switch to nestled sub routines thruout, therefore it appears like what any college kid has used. Terms are even easier.
WINDOWS is going from advertiseing to marketeer & Vista still needs ultimate for "True" Ultie governementI.E.G: Home/Government Premium just won't DUE.

They would justify switching to anything - DOS, Windows ME, whatever. 
For the amount few crooks responsible for decision-making got, Vista will be it.
Their excuse is just so lame ...
And no - I don't have a proof (nor I'm affiliated with any Linux vendor in any way whatsoever). 
But I'm pretty sure police will find proof if if they'll look into it.

I tried 3 or 4 times but I couldn't figure it out.
Even Ubuntu "defiant defiler" defied me & defiled my hard drive. Shrug!
I guess the disorganized train wreck that is linux has finally caught up with them.

As many have mentioned in the past, if Linux had any adult supervision, and not just starry eyed idealists working on it, the whole thing would cost as much (or more) than windows.

FYI, I am writing this on a Ubuntu Hardy machine. Runs great until you actually try and do anything other than Firefox

Now for all those "it doesn't work for me..." complaining little b&$@) do a little reading and have a little patience and maybe u won't complaint so much about Linux... For ubuntu it is stupid simple medibuntu (www.medibuntu.org) and click repository howto so you can play music and videos and add your gstreamer (good, bad and ugly) codecs. To make it even more simple download automatix and there is a one click codec button, btw even in windows u don't get all the popular codecs on a fresh install. 

Last but not least install bleeding edge wine repositories so you can get some windows apps going like in my case steam client to play counter strike.

There are plenty more but play around a bit ...unlike windows u van and remove as often as you want and there is no system slowdown (unless u start adding a bunch of boot time services but only really slows down boot time).

You see people are so used to microsoft programs, so used to windowed applications that they see no point in changing.

After all, who enjoys learning an entirely new shell or interface? Especially when you already know one that works for you!

So some kindergarten teacher has some jellybean flashy program for teaching drooling babes to click the big yellow bird...guess what? it's not made for linux!!

So this teacher tell another which alerts a mother which brings it up in the next parenting meeting & ZOMG!!! we cannot use Linux ever ever again.

It does not come with a start button & thus cannot run our jellybean app. Quick! spend millions so we remain as dumb as we are & teach the children an all-important lesson. Pay microsoft because it keeps giving us what we want, if we are dumb enough to pay for it!

In the german source is NOT written that the government will use Windows Vista on their machines.They bought windows vista licenses but they will use xp because of the better performance (Usage of XP with a Vista license seems to be possible).

So do you think linux is the real problem? You probably took more than 3 or 4 times to figure out how to tie your shoe laces but that doesn't necessarily mean shoes are FAIL.

Sounds like your linux problems have a case of PEBKAC.
OK, so why can't Vienna use WINE to run IE 6, which would then give them ActiveX under Linux or am I missing something here?

Linux is a great OS, but the problem is nothing is bundled for the common man. Sure every techie can download software to make their Linux run just as well as Windows, but the average person doesn't want to look up what app they need, download and install it then learn to use it. These people, like the average Chinese user, wants the basic stuff bundled, which the EU loves to slap companies with multi million and billion euro fines for. There are plenty of distros that do bundle, but most are too lazy to do the research and just want an out of the box solution to all their computing needs.
