DELL SAID it will supply Sun's Solaris OS to customers for some of its Poweredge servers.
Jonathan Schwartz, the Sun CEO and Michael Dell of, er Dell, said the two firms are to cooperate on system certification.
Michael Dell said the Sun deal added another string to Dell's bow. Dell, he said, wants to simplify IT.
It's essentially an OEM agreement. How things have changed over the last 10, nay five, nay two years nay one year.

As in a pun on "slow loris", geddit?

By the way, did you know your CAPTCHA codes tend to repeat? I sense a security vulnerability here...
Actually, Solaris is faster than Linux. Specially on systems with many CPUs. The Solaris kernel hackers have access to DTrace and other things that lets them finetune/debug the Solaris kernel far beyond what is normal. In fact, they had a policy "if linux is faster in some aspect than Solaris, then it is considered as a bug and the Solaris kernel should be corrected immediately".

Linux is originally made for one CPU and quite fast then. The problem is when you try to scale to 100CPUs and beyond. Then you have to redesign the Kernel totally. Linux have only recently entered that arena. Solaris have been multi core for decades. The SUN team is very very talented and pumps out award winning technologies: DTrace, ZFS, Zones, SMF, etc. Far better than Linux's stuff. No one can deny that.

That Linux is used for massively multi core super computers is another thing. Those installations have different goals and you can cheat when you tailor linux for that very simple computing goal. And you could also use Solaris for that too, of course. But Solaris is more complex, and only recently free. That is why Solaris is not as used in supercomputers, although it would do that work better.
What ever happened to the whole Dell is Sun's worst enemy, with the whole "rhymes with hell" advert, and the bi-plane with the "look out dell, sun's got an x64 server" and other bits and bobs.
@Meow

Who is talking Linux here?
Why not compare to OS's and HW that have been running away with the performance crown for years?
