Galaxy video cards stand out from the crowd

Hardware Roundup Plus, Quadro FX1400
Thursday, 15 June 2006, 10:08
DIGITLIFE TESTS four video cards from Axle, Gigabyte and Galaxy. The cards are equiped with 7300GS, 7600GS and 7600GT GPUs. Of those four cards, the Galaxy model is the most impressive. A Zalman fan for very low noise operation, very high operating frequencies, BIOS backup and monitoring. The 7300GS for example is a passively cooled one while the Axle model is aimed at those who want the maximum power without the price with the absence of SLI connectors.

Bytesector tests the OCZ GameXstream 700W power supply unit. It is smaller than most PSUs - made even more evident by the 120mm fan - but packs a substantial firepower. It comes with 18 connectors if the site is to be believed. Rig used was not enough to strain the PSU though. No SLI and no power hungry Pentium EE on the horizon. It is expensive but is backed by a three year warranty.

Bonafide reviews the Casio EX-Z60 6.0MP 3x zoom Digital Camera. This smallish 6.0MP digital camera is excellent when it comes to ease of use and the optical zoom is a boon to work with. It is sturdy and produces good images. A plus point for the fact that it uses SD memory card rather than more expensive xD for example. Although there are better cameras out there, Canon pedigree and the looks will sell quite a few of this one.

Rahul Sood from VoodooPC has some thoughts about the rumours surrounding AMD's possible purchase of ATI. He uses a strange but interesting photo, that of an eagle morphed with a fish, the first one being the predator and the other, the prey. Although he does not say whether it might be a good or bad thing, he thinks that AMD might convert ATI into the kind of company that be a real winner.

Widescreen Gamer has a review of some widescreen monitors at Computex. Obviously, although it was not an objective review, you will find a few photos. The BenQ FP92W for example is a 5ms 19-inch widescreen capable of 1440x900 pixel and supporting DVI. There are also a few photos from Chimei monitors and CTX models.

Lost Circuits tests the midrange professional card named Quadro FX1400. It comes with a fairly unspectacular heatsink fan, with two DVI ports and one TVO and is obviously geared towards the professional graphics market. Although midrange, it comes with only 128MB memory. There are some specialised apps which will benefit from more powerful and expensive cards. Solidworks and ProEngineer are not amongst them. µ
