NOT CONTENT with smashing the iPod out of the MP3 player market, Microsoft wants to knock Apple's iPhone out of the running before it has started.

According to a report from Daily Tech, Microsoft has told the FCC that it wants approval for a prototype wireless device that could be used to talk over the Internet.

Apparently Vole wants to use the device for the purposes of "consumer broadband access and networking," through the use of OFDM for wireless communication.

Vole does not tell the world plus dog that it will be using the Zune, it is difficult to find any appliance in the Microsoft range that could do the job. Unlike the iPhone, Vole does want to use traditional mobile carriers. Instead it is going for OFDM might mean that it is looking at WiMAX.

This could mean a deal with Sprint Nextel which has plans to create a WiMAX network.
