China tightens up Web site rules

It is introducing a service on its portal which allows 80 million people in the country to report websites with "erotic, violent, evil cult and superstitious" info. The INISWC will then warn the operators of the web site to get rid of materials which don't meet with its approval.

The censorship move is described as an attempt to build a "green" cyber space for "sustainable development".

The Daily quoted an official in the Chinese government as saying the Internet is like a double edged blade with both positive and negative information.

Chinese ISPs will cooperate with the INISWC to regulate Web content. A large number of Chinese, exile Tibet, Falun Gong and other sites are routinely blocked by the authorities. µ
